Balochistan: Escalation of military operations and restrictions following train bombing

Authorities in Balochistan have heightened security measures in response to recent threats and incidents, including a train attack in Quetta. Following the attack, security forces launched an operation in the nearby mountainous regions, particularly in the Chiltan mountain range and adjacent areas near Quetta. Residents reported the deployment of gunship and military helicopters, along with shelling in some locations within the hills. However, officials have not yet provided an official statement detailing the objectives or scope of the operation.

The security escalation comes amid rising concerns after an attack on a military shuttle train in Quetta, which was claimed by the Baloch Liberation Army. The incident has prompted authorities to take additional precautions to safeguard the region, especially during the upcoming Eid al-Adha festivities. The attack has heightened fears of further violence and has led to a review of security protocols across the province.

To ensure public safety during the Eid holidays, the Government of Balochistan has announced a series of precautionary measures. In Ziarat, authorities have enforced Section 144, which bans public gatherings and restricts access to several tourist destinations, including Zaryoon Point, Zarzairi, and Domyara. Non-local visitors are also barred from entering certain recreational sites during the Eid period to prevent any potential security risks.

Similarly, officials in Harnai have imposed restrictions on visits to popular tourist and picnic spots, effective from May 26 to May 30. Places such as Peer Chashma, Wam Tangi, Spin Tangi, and Zinda Peer will remain closed to the public during this time. The restrictions aim to prevent any law and order issues amid the tense security situation, especially during the Eid celebrations.

Pakistan Railways has also revised its Eid travel schedule due to ongoing security concerns. Services originating from Quetta will be suspended for the first two days of Eid. The Jaffar Express, which runs between Quetta and Peshawar, has been canceled for May 27 and 28, and inbound services to Quetta will now terminate at Jacobabad. Additional services, including the Bolan Mail to Karachi and other train routes to Chaman, had already been suspended prior to these latest measures.

Authorities have emphasized that these restrictions are necessary to maintain public safety during the Eid period. However, no specific timeline has been provided regarding the resumption of normal train services and access to tourist destinations. The security measures reflect the authorities’ efforts to manage the volatile situation and ensure that the celebrations proceed without incident.
